Since 2009, Edmonton Transit was an early adopter of LED technology, using the RLR series for all cars.

Since 2009, Edmonton Transit was an early adopter of LED technology. They have installed more than 1,600 lamps to date for both their Siemens U2 and SD-160 cars during their mid-life overhaul.


The LED lamps have continued to function without any issues in temperatures as low as -50°C (-58°F) and up to as high as 40°C (104°F).


Operator and rider feedback has been positive, commenting that the ‘lights seem to light the car up brighter than fluorescent and make the car look much cleaner’.


ETS has saved approximately 254 tonnes of carbon emissions per year, and a 54% decrease in energy consumption.
